On July 28, 2021, the first Steering Committee Meeting of the Twinning project for the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection (hereinafter – SSUFSCP)“ Approximation of National Legislation of Ukraine in the field of State Supervision (Control) of GMOs in Open Systems, Protection of Plant Variety Rights, Seed and Seedling Production in line with EU Norms and Standards” took place online.
The aim of the Twinning project is to contribute to address shortcomings in the field of state supervision (control) compliance with safety measures and spread of GMOs in open systems, protection of plant variety rights and seed and seedling production.
The project is implemented jointly with the phytosanitary authorities of Poland, Latvia and the Netherlands.
Vladyslava Mahaletska, Head of the SSUFSCP the beneficiary country project leader, expressed gratitude to the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine for support and maintenance of the project at all stages of its implementation.
In addition, in her speech she stressed that the issue of industrial production and introduction of GMOs is becoming widespread in the world and needs legislative regulation in Ukraine.
During the event, Modris Frikmanis, Resident Twinning Adviser and Vadym Chaikovskyi, Resident Twinning Adviser Partner, reviewed the priority areas, presented the results of the activities for the first quarter of the reporting period within the three components of the project, and acquainted the participants with plans for the next reporting period.
The event was attended by experts from the Twinning project for the SSUFSCP from European Union Member States, representatives of the SSUFSCP and the Center for Adaptation of the Civil Service to the standards of the European Union.
For reference: in accordance with the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine as of October 11, 2016 № 700 “On approval of the procedure for initiating, preparing and implementing Twinning projects” (amended by the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine as of August 22, 2018 № 663) NAUCS coordinates the implementation of Twinning in Ukraine. In addition, the NAUCS is the coordinator of the TAIEX institution building instrument in accordance with the relevant regulations. In order to properly coordinate the Twinning and TAIEX instruments, the Twinning Program Administrative Office in Ukraine was established, which is performed by the Center for Adaptation of the Civil Service to the Standards of the European Union.
